A Fireplace and a Plan

We bought our home in 2005 and since then have made some BIG changes with our fireplace.
Here it is BEFORE we moved in. (Those curtains were one of the first things I ripped down)

The fireplace was extremely dated. 1980's tile anyone?

(That is a sad looking room)

So obviously the first thing to go was the ugly tile. I ripped out the old stuff, borrowed a wet saw, did some serious online research about how to tile, picked out a lovely travertine, cut and installed it. I had never tiled before, but I think it turned out pretty good.

The picture below shows the finished tile job. So far, so good.

Next step? I Convinced my brother-in-law, who is super skilled in woodworking to help build a mantel.

Here it is in progress.

And the finished fireplace mantel.....
Ta da!!!!!

Now for the plan.
I want to extend the wood and the columns all up to the ceiling (covering up all the drywall) and finish it off with some nice chunky crown moulding.

...if only my brother hadn't moved to Montana.
